Men's 4s 8 - 0 Horsham

Sussex Open League Premier Division

East Grinstead Men’s 4th team faced a young Horsham side whom they just beat at the start of the season. East Grinstead were confident however as they were fielding their strongest team of the season.

The first half was very close with E.G. having the majority of possession and chances. E.G. failed to convert any however until late in the half when a short corner won by Jordan Torrilla was drag flicked beautifully into the bottom left corner by Chompy. Straight after Horsham’s pushback however Jordan and Tom Bass worked together to create an opening which led to a pass to Rupert Ashdown who slapped the ball through the keepers legs to make it 2-0 to E.G.

After a very serious team talk the 4s came back stronger than ever and quickly scored two more goals through Rupert and Tom.

At 4-0 the game looked won but to Horsham’s credit they came back fighting.  Sadly they couldn’t get a goal early on due to great defending from Phil, Keith, Ethan, Ashley and Chompy. Simon also played brilliantly in goal even though the majority of time he did not have much to do as the defence were so strong.

It was not long however before East Grinstead had another short corner which Tom scored after taking on the whole Horsham team in what was a great individual goal. At this point Horsham started to drop their heads and found it difficult to clear the ball out their half as the attack and midfield covered the pitch.

Rupert then came back for E.G. and scored a lovely flick to take the 4s tally to 6-0. He was over the moon until he realised that was his hat-trick and three means a jug!

Later in the second half Jordan and Rupert won a penalty flick which Jordan calmly slotted in the bottom left corner to take the lead to 7-0. Sadly for Horsham two minutes later E.G. scored again when Rupert’s shot hit the keeper and Jordan’s reverse flick found the roof of the net.

There were now only five minutes on the clock when East Grinstead won a short which Tom smashed home to make it 9-0. He also now owed a jug. With only seconds remaining E.G. won another short and a third jug looked likely until a mis-communication in the side saw the ball fly off the sideline.

Overall the 9-0 win was very welcome and now the 4s can continue in their efforts to win the league. Well played to the whole team as everyone really did give their all. Next week the 4s are away to Brighton and Hove in what will be a very good match which E.G. go into it full of confidence.
