Men's 3rd XI: 4 - 1 Surbiton Higgins London League Division 1
The Mens 3's returned to winning ways on Saturday with a resounding 4-1 win over the Surrey based team from Surbiton. Bolstered by the return of some of the big guns at either end of the field it was an especially pleasing victory for the 3rds who were looking to reverse an alarming post festive slump and return to the Good Life. A fine first half performance by all, in the face of some concerted provocation from the bully boys from the 'burbs. The defence, marshalled admirably by Woodley and Horner, allowed the midfield general Foster to orchestrate some fluid passing moves with Howe and Horne which resulted in a thoroughly deserved 2-0 lead at the break. Although the visitors managed to claw back a fortuitous short corner goal early in the second half the men in white responded instantly through Sheldon, who fired high into the net to cap an excellent performance from the EG midfielder. Keeper Dakin who had enjoyed an energetic first half was largely untroubled in the second, as the home team asserted their domination. With a fourth and final goal in the closing minutes, the only further excitement came from the increasingly petulant visitors who contrived to have a shot after the final whistle well saved before remonstrating with the umpire that the new rules indicate a game of hockey was now 70 minutes and 10 seconds long. After all it would have made all the difference. All in all a good effort, some areas to work on but some very encouraging signs from the rapidly maturing 3rd XI.
Scorers: Sheldon, Horne ...
