Men's 3rd XI: 4 - 1 Teddington Higgins London League Division 1
The Mens 3rd XI extricated themselves from their recent mid season slump on Saturday with a convincing win over Teddington 2's. Following some alarming performances in recent weeks, and having decided that if we were unable to score from set pieces we were at least going to stop conceding from them, the youthful 3's all arrived early for an ad hoc training session prior to the game. With skipper Giles Horner leading by example and demonstrating to some of the junior members of the side the commitment required to stand the line at a corner there was a definite zip to the side that has been noticeably absent of late. A new-look back four of Forbes, Martin, Hook and Horner held the pink clad dandies at bay, and on the odd occasion they did manage to penetrate the previously mentioned, keeper Giles Dakin was at hand to snuff out any danger. After a period of sustained pressure the prolific Simon Horne thrust home the opener from a trademark 8 inches and the men in white were in the lead for the first time since early October. Seemingly spurred on by this, the visitors mounted their own offensive and when their left defender dribbled the length of the pitch unchallenged, a first time shot from his bouncing cross whistled into the EG net. Half time parity was short lived however, within five minutes of the restart Henry Howe had slotted a bullet of a corner into the visitors backboard and followed this up shortly afterwards with a replica. 3-1 up and coasting, a pleasant and near forgotten feeling for many of the 3's and EG's midfield came into their own. With Peter Foster rolling back the years and Adam Woodley inspired on the right the home side created a number of chances to increase their lead but to no avail. It was Will Soutar who truly impressed, with tireless forays the length of the pitch, excellent distribution, and vision beyond his years, even the minor irritation of a ball to the throat could not thwart him and he duly set up another home penalty corner with 10 minutes left on the clock. Up stepped Howe once more and having already terrified the visiting keeper with his devastating drag flick ability, his dummy and subsequent strike into the middle of the goal was roundly appreciated by all. Next week see's the 3's travel to Battersea Park to take on Spencer who are 7 out of 7 so far this season so will undoubtedly provide the men from Sussex with their sternest test to date.
Scorers: S Horne, H Howe 3
