Saints 2 - 2 Mid Sussex Sussex Vets
League
Bolstered by the combination of Guy Workman and Rob Clare acting Capt Mike Lewis looked forward with confidence to a competitive match. The side (half of which were sweepers) looked strong with a powerful midfield which dominated for much of the match.
Mike, John Spiers, Guy and Rob worked hard throughout to dominate the middle of the park with Gary Needle successfully captaining the defence with stout performances by Alan and Tim. Against the run of play Mids opened the scoring from a short corner with a flick which Chan could only deflect into the top left hand corner. Soon afterwards we drew level after Steve W drilled a short corner home off their keeper’s stick and into the roof of their goal.
In the second half we dominated for much of the game with Tim Snook making the most of the acres of space on the left hand side of the park. After a fast move from right to left Steve W nudged a ball past their sweeper for Rob to slot home under the body of their diving keeper. Unusually Wyksey couldn’t convert his chances, one just over the bar and a flick parried away by their keeper, so we entered the final quarter 2-1 up.
We were cruising to a victory when 17 minutes from time Guy was felled by an appalling tackle from behind, their defender having already chopped at him twice. Ankle badly hurt Guy was forced to sit out the rest of the game. Down to ten men they forced another short corner from which they scored. Further poor tackling saw Guy’s attacker Yellow carded after some further tree felling on Steve W. We played out the rest of the game well and were unlucky not to have won.
Men of the Match were Guy and Rob both for good performances and for playing for us as otherwise the match would have been cancelled.
