Men's 5s 4 - 2 Eastbourne Eaglets

Sussex Open League Div 2

With their goalkeeper and captain p****ing off to play for the 4ths (and letting in a bucket full of goals, LOL (4 actually, and we're blaming James!), the 5th team travelled to bottom of the table, Eastbourne.

Gowen was deputising in goal - no not Paul, but his son Alex who dives around and somehow manages to get to places his father could never reach. Stand-in skipper Rob Thorburn plotted a masterstroke by playing Andy Jackson (whose play has much unrealised potential) at centre half and he rewarded him with an excellent performance, combining well with Joe Carr who is solid and dependable at the back.

Roshan Patel also had a good game on the right hand side of the defence, keeping close tabs on the opposing winger, and he can improve further by resisting his urge to dive in with unnecessary tackles.

Unsurprisingly, the 5th team's goals came from the midfield players, as the strikers, as they have done for most of the season, again fired blanks.  Surprisingly, the unproductive short corner routine - that hasn't varied all season from a stop and hit - suddenly produced a goal.

The 5th XI's fourth goal, scored by Andy Jackson, was an amazing reverse stick sweep, of the type that when tried in training is more likely to hit passing cars rather than the goal. It was one of those goals that if it had been struck by a 1st team player everybody would have said what great skill, however as it was scored by a lower team player it was a case of "cor, that was a bit of luck".

Scorers: Chris Offler 2, Andy Jackson 2
