Men's 2s: 2 - 2 Southgate

London League Premier Division

East Grinstead started a weekend double header with a difficult game at Southgate looking for a win that could take us to the top of the table. In the end, following a hugely disappointing showing, we maintained our unbeaten record.

On a sodden and filthy pitch we struggled to exert an early influence on the game, our basic skills letting us down as we continually conceded possession to the opposition. It was somewhat against the run of play that we struck first blood, Andrew Medcalf volleying home after the goalkeeper had saved a Mikey Holland short corner. Notable chances to extend the lead were missed and we paid when Southgate deservedly equalised with minutes remaining in the first half.

A tactical shuffle shortly into the second half contributed to EG enjoying our best period of the match. True to form this season, we created numerous opportunities but a lack of composure resulted in the final pass or shot failing to find their target. Southgate capitalised through a quick, incisive break from their own ‘D’. When we needed Superman to save us, we got Lois Lane, as our defence parted like the Red Sea leaving keeper Paul Coltham exposed as Southgate walked the ball into the net.

Further pressure followed and we equalised when Dwain Quan-Chan flicked high into the net at a short corner but we were unable to find a winner to steal the three points. Improvements would have to be made following a long trip up to Bowdon in the National Cup.
