Sussex Open League Division 2
If memory serves, theres a game popular at childrens
parties called "Statues". Participants move around whilst the music
plays, and freeze when it stops. Saturday in Crawley, someone forgot to
turn the music back on.
On the tacky sand of Hazlewick school, in a drifting fine
drizzle of rain of the kind a counterpart from Bracknell describes as
"the really wet sort", EG took to the field to try and avenge the 9-0
drubbing handed
out before Christmas at Saint hill by the leagues second placed side.
Sporting a couple of last minute reselections from the suddenly heavily
populated 4th XI prior to leaving home - thanks to Alex G and JP for
volunteering - a squad of 12 at least took to the field with a degree of
optimism, bolstered early as Parker struck home a sweet reverse stick
shot to give the visitors a surprise lead.
And then the music stopped, and we watched Crawley practice for the next
hour. If any positives can be taken from such lacklustre performance,
then I suppose it could be said that any team can expect one or two such
performances in a given season, and results aside, this wasn't a typical
performance for the 5's. And, if you're going to have a bad game, at
least do it against a top team...
So 2 games to go, and with the table still tight (we sit 10th, but only
6 points behind Chi in 4th, so theoretically..... well, we can
dream...), its still all to play for with crunch games against Mid
Sussex (7th, 3 points in front), and Lewes (6th, 4 points).
Team: Thomson, Nash, Carr, Gowen, Hurrell, Taylor, Parker,
Cooper, James, Jackson, Russell, Edgerton
Scorer: Parker
PS - For those eagerly awaiting Hugo's performance of "God Save the
Queen", its intended that this will take place during the awards dinner.
Tickets available now.
PPS - JP has sadly decided that he'd rather spend his Saturdays at
Waitrose. We thank him for his efforts this season, and wish him luck in
his new career.
