East Grinstead Ladies 2nd XI 2 - 1 Chichester

Sussex Ladies League Division 2

The match day experience worked well with the team arriving nice and early for the game against Chichester. Spirits were as good as the weather, although some trepidation crept in when our 10 man team watched as a 14 strong top of the league squad arrived.

After a quick pre-game huddle by Captain and man of the match Shirley we knew that a strong determined effort was needed by all if we were to hold our own against this strong opposition. Every member of the team rose to the occasion working hard as a team, to give new girl Nicky the chance to score the first goal of the day and take a surprise early lead.

A reinvigorated Chi came back in force but strong defending together with a kamikaze wipe-out tackle manoeuvre by Debbie kept the score in EG’s favour as the half time whistle blew.

After the all too short half time break Chi came back with increased pressure and managed to even the score line. Undaunted Grinstead once again pulled together and with some fantastic distribution by Louise, Katie scored to take the score line to 2-1. Digging deep to find all their energy EG continued to work hard, responded quickly to the continued substitutions of Chi.

A few breaks from the Chi attack kept the defence on their toes but Grinstead's determination and some great saves from new goalie Rosie held the score line firmly in our favour. The final whistle came as a relief to both teams’ tired legs but EG ladies were elated to have won against a team that on paper, if not on the pitch, should have had the upper hand. Well done girls – a victory to be proud of!
