EG 4 - 3 ChichesterU21 Sussex Cup Final
Having qualified the previous weekend for their 4th consecutive final with victories over South Saxons, Worthing and a draw with neighbours Lewes, East Grinstead met their long term rivals Chichester on Saturday at St Andrew’s School, Worthing.
EG decided to enter the Under 18 team that had played so well together throughout the Mercian League competition. Captained by Darren Cheesman, the first half passed without incident or goal despite East Grinstead playing some of the better and more attractive hockey. The defensive quartet of Rob Woodley, Dan Masters, Seb Martin and Aidan Braithwaite coped capably with all of the Chichester attacks and the half-time team talk called for more of the same as goals would come.
Grinstead took the lead when great approach work from the midfield engine of Christian Wimshurst, Will Arthur and Alex Watson secured a short corner from which Andy Piper scored – a straight strike deflecting off a Chichester stick into the roof of the net. Chichester equalised shortly afterwards before Darren Cheesman restored EG’s advantage. Grinstead really started to lift their game and with this Tom Bass’s fine solo run into the heart of Chichester’s ‘D’ was rewarded with another short corner that Andy Piper drilled into the bottom corner. Chichester rallied to bring the game back to 3 – 2 before Darren Cheesman capped off a fine performance with a solo goal starting in EG’s own half.
East Grinstead secured their 4th consecutive victory equalling their best run ever in the Sussex U21 Cup. Our congratulations go to the entire squad comprising of Mark Potton, Rafe Budden, Rob Woodley, Seb Martin, Aidan Braithwaite, Hamish Forbes, Dan Masters, Christian ‘Croydon’ Wimshurst, Alex Watson, Will Arthur, Darren Cheesman ©, Henry Howe, Andy Piper, Tom Bass and Wesley Jackson.
Our thanks go to all the supporters who followed the team over the 2 weekends.
Will Arthur has agreed to Captain the team next year.
Scorers: Darren Cheesman 2; Andy Piper 2
