Men's 1st XI: 4 - Surbiton 3

Slazenger English Hockey Premier Division

Winning send off for East Grinstead

EAST Grinstead gave their home fans a winning send-off with a 4-3 defeat of
Surbiton.

There is still a visit to Loughborough Students this Sunday, plus cup finals
weekend a week later, but Grinstead were determined to reward their loyal
supporters with a victory in the final home game of the season.

With an appeal against their 3-3 draw at Hampstead and Westminster still to
be decided, this was a crucial victory for Grinstead in their bid to
overhaul Loughborough and claim the third European slot for the new
Champions League-style Euro Hockey League.

As it stands they cannot finish third but if the Hampstead game is ordered
to be replayed then the situation could all change.

Manager Matt Jones said: "In terms of the players, we have tried to keep the
appeal out of the limelight in order to keep the squad as focused as they
can be.

"When they heard Loughborough had won earlier in the day, they thought third
place had gone but they reacted to that with another strong performance.
"The game ended up a little closer than it should have been but we were
worthy winners."

Mark Justice marked his return to the side by sliding in the opener on 17
minutes and Ashley Jackson added a second soon after. Surbiton replied just
before half-time and then got another after Ben Payne had restored the
two-goal advantage.

Jackson's second of the game made it 4-2 with 20 minutes remaining but
Grinstead weren't helped by a flurry of yellow cards and the visitors pulled
back another in the closing stages.

Jones added: "If it hadn't been for a number of enforced rests' which put
us down to ten men on three occasions and nine men for a short period we
would have steam-rollered Surbiton."

George Harris again impressed in goal while teenager Josh Cather produced an
accomplished display after a month out with shin splints.

East Grinstead travel to Loughborough Students this Sunday for a 2pm start in
their last fixture of the 2006/2007 SEHL National League Season.

Next week, Grinstead make the trip to Reading in an attempt to make it to
the National Cup Final for the second year in succession. They will face
National Division 1 opponents Bowdon in the first Semi Final at 12.15.

In the other Semi Final, Surbiton take on current Premier league leaders
Cannock with the winners progressing through to the Final again at Reading HC
on Sunday 1st April at 3pm.
