Men's 1st XI: 3 - Hampstead & Westminster 3

Slazenger English Hockey Premier Division

Saturday's 3-3 draw with Hampstead and Westminster has provided the talking point of the weekend and left Grinstead's European hopes in doubt.

Grinstead are to appeal against the result after Hampstead coach Todd Williams was yellow carded with the score at 2-2 and, under league rules, one home player should have been removed for the duration of his suspension.

With Williams suspended for the final 16 minutes of the game, the hosts should have played with ten men for that period.  However, the match officials did not enforce the rule which left Hampstead with a full complement of 11 players, who helped them take a 3-2 lead, only for Ashley Jackson to level from a short corner in the last minute.

The result has left Grinstead four points behind third-placed Loughborough Students with only three games remaining.

Grinstead want the game replayed.  Victory in any replay would move them to within two points of Loughborough who they play in the final game of the season.

The controversy masked a somewhat disappointing display from Grinstead who trailed at half-time despite taking the lead through Jackson from a short corner.  Mark Pearn levelled ten minutes into the second half before the problems occurred in the final 16 minutes.
