U18s lose out in the Mercian Final

The U18s got off to a flying start on Sunday in their Mercian League semi-final against Old Loughtonians at Woking. Manager Phillip Coote had ensured that the team's pre-match preparations were second to none by calling on the support of three regular 1st team squad members, player/coach Mark Pearn, Manager Matt Jones and Physio Gemma Frisby.  The boys responded with an impressive display of skills and goals, dismissing their opponents 3-0 in a comfortable win.  The final against Southgate saw many chances created by the team but they were unable to find the target and the game went to 20 minutes of golden-goal extra time.  Following a sustained period of pressure by EG, Southgate broke from defence and scored the winner with five minutes remaining.  Match report soon; photos here

Courier Media Group Sports Awards

Dear All,

Following the Courier Sports Awards on Tuesday night at the Salomon's Conference Centre near Tunbridge Wells I am delighted to report that the Men's First Team won the Team of the Year Award.

I would like to congratulate and thank all those involved in the whole operation of the squad. Thanks to Phillip Coote for all his work on the sponsorship front and especially to Mark Pearn and Richard Organ our Outdoor and Indoor coaches, to Richard Payne and Scott Ashdown our Outdoor and Indoor Captains, Gemma Frisby our physiotherapist and obviously all the players who put in so much time and effort.

You may have noticed one glaring omission from the above - I am also delighted to report that the first team Manager, Matt Jones, won the Unsung Hero award. Congratulations Matt and testament to the enormous amount of time you put into helping to run, what I believe overall (Indoor and Out), is the best performing squad in the country.

I know Matt would have no hesitation in joining me in passing on our thanks to Ann Needle, who was also nominated in this category. Without the voluntary hours Ann puts in during the week on The Grinner/Website/Club noticeboard /Memberships and match day preparations we simply would not be where we are today as a club.

Congratulations one and all - and good luck for the remaining games of the season.

Kind regards

James Leman

Chairman

EG bag the points in a convincing 6-3 win over Havant

Grinstead's Men's 1st XI delivered the goods in probably one of their finest performances yet this season. In front of the faithful Saint Hill supporters, EG bagged 3 more crucial points in their quest for European qualification and after results elsewhere in the SEHL National Premier Division went their way could still have a shot at the title.

More importantly for EG is that their EHL target is is firmly in sight but know that the final 5 games will prove whether the squad is ready for the European stage.

Ladies Indoor Hockey - Thursday 6th December

All ladies and junior girls are invited to come along to the Sports Hall this Thursday from 8pm to 10pm.  Beginners very welcome, we have excellent coaches who will explain everything, this is the first session we've had at the Club for ladies so why not give it a try?  Email Debbie for more info, or just come along with your usual hockey gear, non-marking trainers and £2.

Michael Strudwick

It is with deep regret that we announce that Michael Strudwick has died.  Michael was a player at EGHC during the 1960s and a had recently become a regular Saturday evening visitor to the club.  His funeral is at 3.15pm on Tuesday 4th December at Worth Cemetary. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.

EG make history against Loughborough

Having beaten Cannock last week, last Sunday it was the turn of Loughborough Students to suffer as Grinstead made history once again, beating the Students for the first time.  This secured 2nd place in the Premier Division, with goals from Ben Payne, Scott Ashdown and Danny Hall, and demonstrated yet again the team spirit and work ethic of the whole squad.  Congratulations to Scott, on scoring his 100th EHL goal.

Ben opens the scoring for EG to make it 1-1, while Scott puts us into the lead 7 minutes later.
