EuroHockey
Update
England men play Germany tonight (Wednesday) at
7pm in the final Pool A match - they must draw or win to secure a semi-final
place. Following a frustrating 2-2 draw against Belgium in their
opening game on Sunday, England fired 7 past the Czech Republic on Monday.
Ashley Jackson has played in both matches, and was in the starting line-up
against Belgium. Captain Glenn Kirkham said that he felt the team
played better in their first match but were unable to put their chances
away. Let's hope they create and score in abundance tonight.
England ladies are already into the Semis and
face ... you've guessed it, Germany, on Thursday at 6.30pm. In
their pool A matches they beat Ireland 3-0 on Saturday, Italy 4-0 on Monday
and lost 1-0 to the Netherlands on Tuesday.
Tickets are still available
for all games - come up and cheer them on!!!

A note from the Chairman
of EGHC
Dear All
Regrettably, two bits of sad news
to start the year.
We have learnt recently that Tony
Wilkins, father of Andrew and Richard, passed away between Christmas and New
Year. Tony was an active member and great supporter of the Hockey Club and
spent much time volunteering to assist in the running of the club and its
activities, recently coming to support Andy and the Vets when he could. He
was also a scorer for the Cricket Club's 1st XI last season. The date
for the funeral is Monday 15th January at St Swithun’s Church,
East Grinstead at 14.30, and afterwards at the Sports Club.
Our thoughts are with Hilary and
the family.
Also with much sadness we have to
report the passing away of Brian Poole on Tuesday 2nd January. Brian joined
East Grinstead Hockey Club in 1960 and has been an integral part of our club
ever since. He took on numerous positions within the club from Pavilion
Manager to Vets Captain. After retiring from playing he became even more
involved in all aspects of the operation of the club assisting on many
committees and latterly an integral part of our loyal ‘sherry brigade’
supporters club who travelled the length and breadth of the country year
after year supporting the 1st XI both indoor and out. A vice-president
and very proud donator of our ‘Most Improved Outdoor Player Award’ – Brian’s
loyalty and friendship will be missed by many. Our thoughts are also at
this time with Marjorie and the family.
The date for the funeral is
Monday 15th January at 12.45 at Worth Crematorium and after at East
Grinstead Sports Club - Ashdown Room.
At time such as these I know our
‘family’ club will come together to do whatever we can to support the two
families.
Regards
James Leman, Chairman EGHC

2006 ... a year to be proud of
As
we see out 2006 the Club can look back on a fantastic 12 months, becoming
National Indoor Champions in February, finalists in the EH National Cup,
finishing in the top 6 of the National League having been newly
promoted, winning the BBC South East 'Club of the Year' award and going
into the Christmas break only 2 points off the top of the EHL Premier
League and into the last 8 of the EH Knockout Cup - having beaten
Reading in the 5th round.
The Club has a great deal to look forward to in 2007,
starting with the defence of the National Indoor title throughout January,
the Mens 1s, 2s and 3s all riding high in their respective leagues, and the
Indoor squad representing England at the European Indoor Club Champions
Trophy at the end of February. Thank-you to those who work so hard
behind the scenes to enable those on the pitch to develop their potential
and achieve this level of success.

With the Men's

from it - they both go into the Christmas break lying comfortably in 3rd

Big Night Out
EGHC held a Club Night on Saturday 25th November, starting at 6.30pm with
the Men's 1st XI Premier League match against Hampstead &
Westminster. Proceedings then moved to the Bar where the new 1st XI
squad members were presented with Club Ties. A raffle was held throughout the day to raise funds for our European
Indoor Campaign to Brussels in February 2007 and over £150 was
raised. Thank-you to everyone who supported and organised this
event.
1st XI success in league and cup double-header weekend
The Men's 1st XI twice
came from behind on Saturday to draw 2-2 with Canterbury in the league thanks to goals from Dave de Prez
and Jack Marfleet. Dave hit the spot twice from open play on Sunday to put EG through to
the 5th round of the EH Cup - where they now face Reading at Saint Hill on
10th December. With five regulars missing from the side on Sunday,
Will Arthur grabbed the chance to play for the team. Manager Matt Jones said
"Despite a difficult weekend with a double away trip, we had a
fantastic results, showing the strength in depth which we now
have"
